Approximation Algorithms for Maximization Problems Arising in Graph Partitioning

چکیده
Given a graph G = (V;E), a weight function w : E ! R+ and a parameter k we examine a family of maximization problems arising naturally when considering a subset U V of size exactly k. Speci cally we consider the problem of nding a subset U V of size k that maximizes : Max-k-Vertex Cover : the weight of edges incident with vertices in U . Max-k-Dense Subgraph : the weight of edges in the subgraph induced by U . Max-k-Cut : the weight of edges cut by the partition (U; V nU). Max-k-Not Cut : the weight of edges not cut by the partition (U; V n U). We present a number of approximation algorithms based on linear and semide nite programming, and obtain approximation ratios higher than those previously published.

Spectral methods for network community detection and graph partitioning
We consider three distinct and well studied problems concerning network structure: community detection by modularity maximization, community detection by statistical inference, and normalized-cut graph partitioning. Each of these problems can be tackled using spectral algorithms that make use of the eigenvectors of matrix representations of the network. We show that with certain choices of the ...
متن کاملComputational aspects of greedy partitioning of graphs
In this talk we consider a variant of graph partitioning consisting in partitioning the vertex set of a graph into the minimum number of sets such that each of them induces a graph in a fixed hereditary class of graphs. We discuss the computational complexity of several problems arising when such partitions are generated by the greedy algorithm. Some of these problems are computationally hard, ...
متن کاملGraph Partitioning and Semi-definite Programming Hierarchies
Graph partitioning is a fundamental optimization problem that has been intensively studied. Many graph partitioning formulations are important as building blocks for divide-and-conquer algorithms on graphs as well as to many applications such as VLSI layout, packet routing in distributed networks, clustering and image segmentation. Unfortunately such problems are notorious for the huge gap betw...

This lecture gives a general introduction of graph partitioning problems. We will begin with the definitions of some classic graph partitioning problems (e.g. multiway cut, multicut, sparsest cut), and discuss their relationships. Then we will focus on deriving two approximation algorithms. For the multiway cut problem, we will show a 2-approximation algorithm through a combinatorial argument. ...
متن کاملMixed Robust/Average Submodular Partitioning: Fast Algorithms, Guarantees, and Applications
We study two mixed robust/average-case submodular partitioning problems that we collectively call Submodular Partitioning. These problems generalize both purely robust instances of the problem (namely max-min submodular fair allocation (SFA) Golovin (2005) and min-max submodular load balancing (SLB) Svitkina and Fleischer (2008)) and also generalize average-case instances (that is the submodula...
